Dear classmates, honored professor, beloved friends, good afternoon.
Friendship is not rational at the first sight. Friendship is about giving without taking in return. Friendship is about mutual trust. Friendship is about a social contract signed by two people, able and willing to share time, information, energy with the other one. Friendship is about a link some say irreplaceable. Friendship could be even characterized by three words: Best Friend Forever. To these three words, I’ll answer my own phrase: What the hell?
What the hell are you thinking about? Do you really think the guy you’re spending most of your time with will be able or even willing to continue spending as much time with you in the future? Do your really think that life will spare you two just because you want it? Do you really think your future projects and opportunities will be the same?
What the hell are you hoping? Do you really hope to spend your life with the person you know best and with whom you have no other perspective than going to the theatre once a month, on the third Tuesday after you’ve ended classes, after you’ve left your crappy job interview, after your yoga class, after you’ve changed your kid diapers for the 18th time of the day?
Come on, you’re not married; you’re not even in something close to the family circle.
Some might say I’m cynical. Maybe I act as I am but it is not the right term to use, this is just not… relevant. This is all about being pragmatic, practical, rational.
