Nuer tribes, like many other Nomadic tribes, have a unique way of naming their cattle. These names are prescribed according to the color of the animal, Mostly oxen. For example, the Nuer of South Sudan has an elaborate vocabulary to describe cattle. The Nuer has dozens of names for cattle because of the cattle’s particular histories. Another way is the formality and the informality of the Nuer language and its influence on the Nuer culture and behavior. Nuer language has technical ways of tone and tendency resembling many other languages around the globe. For example, talking to an important person who is a bit older in age is different from having a conversation with a peer or speaking to your age mate. Therefore, disrespectful ways of speaking to those who are grown up, can lead to offend. As Boyd Jenkins puts it that, “a casual slight may lead to a quarrel or fight. When the threat of violence erupts, age mates or family leaders are called on to cool things off.” Beliefs, the Nuer are extremely religious people whose beliefs can be summarized by the word Kouth (God). “Kuoth (God) is an all encompassing God associated with the sky, but it’s always present in all things, living and dead and is also associated with the many spirits; and the spirit form of Nuer tradition.” In the Nuer traditional culture, Kuoth (God) “supplies explanation for phenomena which cannot be explained in everyday life.” Because of the fact that it is accepted without question, the Nuer has difficulty of explaining Kuoth (God) because of its abstract nature and the fact that is used to generalize the spirits of who possesses people; and its always given “the role of creator and its said to be the origin of the ancestors.” The Nuer, however, were “sophisticated enough to adhere to the concepts of aliveness which include the notion of a soul or spirits residing in the object.” They treat ...
