The objective of this report is to identify and explain the problems at the Ottershaw branch of Zinn’s Burgers and Pizza to enable Chris Pike to understand and address the current situation at the restaurant.
Overview of the Problems Identified
As the case study says, the main problems identified at the Ottershaw branch are:
The décor and furniture look tired
Cooking equipment needs replacing
The menus require updating
Staff problems are common
Consumers are more aware of the effect of high calorie foods on their health
Stakeholders are concerned over the environmental impact of the fast-food sector
Explanation of the problems identified
In order to explain some of the problems at the restaurant, it is vital to understand the importance of stakeholders. All businesses have internal and external stakeholders. The stakeholders are individuals, groups or other organisations that are affected by the company’s decisions or that can affect them.
Analysing stakeholders is about identifying who the stakeholders are and recognising their power and interest in the business. Once defined, the power and interest of the stakeholders can be shown on a power and interest matrix – see Figure 1.1.

One of the biggest problems identified lies with the employees. Employees would fall into category B on the above matrix as they have a high interest in the business but do not have the power to influence the decisions which are made.
An example of this is when the benefits of free pizza, salad and soft drinks were withdrawn. As the case study says, the manager felt that dissatisfied employees would either quit or would be content to put up with the new formal rules. The rules were changed with no prior discussion or warning and this left the employees feeling undervalued. It is important to keep employees informed of the proposed changes. If the business does not do this, employee retention will be extremely difficult.
The problems at the restaurant can also be analysed using SWOT. SWOT is an acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. It helps the business to recognise the strengths of the company and the threats posed by the external environment.
The following SWOT analysis identifies the areas of weakness, strength, opportunity and threat at the Ottershaw branch.
