Role of Chris Gardener in Pursuit of Happyness:
In Pursuit of Happyness, Will Smith plays Chris Gardner, a motivated man living on the last of his means. Chris is constantly looking for a consistent quality of life, but seems to get beaten down at every point. A few times throughout the movie, Gardner expresses his thoughts on happiness, and whether or not it is actually attainable.
Living in San Francisco in the 1980s, Chris struggles to make a living during an economic recession and provide for his wife and young son. When he loses everything, including his wife, and is left homeless and destitute, he uses his inner resources—his intelligence, charm, wit, and extraordinary ability of not giving up— in a seemingly endless struggle to protect his son and gain economic security.
While playing basketball with his son, Chris Gardner (as played by Will Smith) tells his son to forget basketball and do something useful. Realizing the mistake of what he just said, Chris tells his son, “Don't ever let someone tell you, you can't do something. Not even me.” He wants his son to know what he knows, that a persistent pursuit of your own dreams is the best way to bring a sense of happiness to your life.
Armed with only a high school education and his unique personality, Chris overcomes every obstacle in his path to become a stockbroker and finally a millionaire
CHRIS GARDNER is forever running. He runs to get to the office on time; he runs to pick up his son from daycare; he runs to recover a precious item of medical equipment that’s been stolen from him; and he runs to get a bed for the night at the homeless shelter.
He loses everything – first his job, his wife, and finally the roof over his head – following a poor investment decision. But later on he uses his attitude, will power and optimism to turn things upside down or literally speaking, downside up.
