Description
How and why does Macbeth change from a war hero to a mad, evil ruler?Preview
Throughout this play Macbeth’s character has changed form a war hero into a villain. In other words he has changed from a brave warrior, trustworthy and helpful man into a serial killer! Shakespeare has used different ways of writing to engage the audience by using dramatic irony to make the audience more involved in the play as they know one of the secrets that other characters in the play do not know. Additionally William Shakespeare has used animal imagery and also wrote about Macbeth’s hallucination to tell the audience how hysteric Macbeth became after listening to the witches prophesies. Towards the end of the play the scenes are shorter. Shakespeare has used this technique to keep the audience entertained by making the last act shorter.
The impression we have from Duncan and the sergeant after the battle against Norway tells us that Macbeth is a war hero; This is seen when Duncan calls him “Noble Macbeth” and “my worthy Cawdor” The first impression from Duncan tells us that at the start of the play Macbeth was a war hero; thus he was highly parsed by Duncan as he has fought for his country. The word “noble” demonstrates to the reader that Macbeth was an honourable man. In the second impression from Duncan Shakespeare uses the word “worthy” to describe Macbeth’s character at the start of the play. The word “worthy tells the audience that Macbeth was a trustworthy person. Macbeth was not only admired by the king of Scotland but he was also praised by the sergeant; this is seen in act two scenes one when the sergeant says: “He is brave Macbeth, who has ripped Macdonald open from navel jaw” The fact that Macbeth was admired by two important/ noble men will make the reader imagine how significant Macbeth was to Scotland .This suggests that Macbeth was respected by many people because of his braveness. In this quotation Shakespeare has described how Macbeth is heroic by describing how he fought in the battle.
Macbeth did not believe in the witches prophesies at first, but eventually when two predictions became true he started to ‘TRUST’ the witches. This is presented in act one scene three line 130; “Two truths are told, as happy prologues to the swelling act of the imperial thane .....This supernatural soliciting cannot be ill; cannot be good” This evidence from the text supports my point because Macbeth is saying that two predictions have became true so the last prediction must become true .Additionally the words that tell us that Macbeth started believing in the witches are ‘ two truths are told’ These words signify that Macbeth started believing in the witches after two of their prophesies ...
