In addition the Sunday Pictorial ran a headline in late 1940 with “Rich Hotels turn people away during air raids.” A young couple had asked if they could stay in the shelter in a Mayfair hotel but were immediately told it was for residents only. The Home Security department saw such a class feeling as a thread to national unity and caused concern throughout the war.
With nearly every major demand for additional contribution to the war effort, the rhetoric of equality of sacrifice led to the expression of class antagonism. Given the context of the smouldering working-class suspicions of the rich that lingered on from the immediate pre-war years of unemployment, official injunctions of “equality of sacrifice” provided both a language and a rationale for continuing expressions of class resentment.
