(a) Outline the main characteristics of consumer industries.

Consumer industries are part of the secondary sector and involve the direct selling of products to the general public. Examples include the car industry, and high-tech industries such as those selling electronic appliances. Common characteristics include the employment of low skilled workers on the production side, low pay, often being located close to an urban area, and using Fordist and just-in-time production methods. Consumer Industries took on a leading role in economic growth in the twentieth century, and typically they are situated in MEDC's. However, they are becoming increasingly global, and there has been movement towards because of their cheap labour supply, and an available market.
